Introducing Nurse Avery – a Google-backed tool versus the healthcare shortfall

Google’s public sector division has partnered with a digital health firm to launch a new AI-driven nurse.

Google Public Sector’s advanced technology and cloud infrastructure helped US-based startup Drive Health to create Nurse Avery as a partnership project.

Its capabilities include real-time chart reviews, appointment scheduling, and proactive engagement.

Drive Health said the development fits into its mission to “democratise healthcare access, improve patient outcomes, and address the critical shortage of healthcare professionals nationwide”.

CEO Kevin Longoria said: “Healthcare is at a crossroads, and the need for scalable, innovative solutions has never been greater. Nurse Avery by Drive Health, powered by Google, represents our bold step toward transforming healthcare delivery.

“Together, we’re building a future where technology doesn’t just complement care – it elevates it.”

According to the American Hospital Association (AHA), the US will face a shortage of 3.2 million direct care professionals by 2026.

Meanwhile, labour costs are continuing to rise, while hospitals increasingly operate at a financial loss.

Nurse Avery is designed to help bridge the labour gap by assisting with discharge outreach, care coordination, triage, engagement, and care plan adherence.

“With Nurse Avery, providers can deliver high-quality care at scale, supported by Google’s powerful cloud infrastructure,” its creators say.

Chris Hein, field chief technology officer at Google Public Sector, said: “We are thrilled to partner with Drive Health in launching Nurse Avery, a technology with immense potential to redefine patient care.

“This collaboration exemplifies Google’s commitment to innovation and supporting organisations that are paving the way for accessible, equitable healthcare solutions.”

For patients, Nurse Avery serves as a secure, responsive, and personalised healthcare assistant.

The application provides instant access to care plan details, medication instructions, and answers to symptom-related questions, all while facilitating communication with providers.

By eliminating the need to navigate complex phone menus or endure frustrating delays, Nurse Avery ensures patients feel confident that their providers are always informed.

Built on Google Cloud’s industry-leading security and auditing capabilities, Nurse Avery upholds HIPAA compliance to safeguard patient data at all times.
