BYD launches popular Dolphin, Seal, and Atto 3 EVs in Kenya with local Toyota dealer

Kenya just got a new EV competitor. On Wednesday, BYD launched three of its top-selling EVs, the Dolphin, Seal, and Atto 3, in Kenya. The electric vehicles will be sold by local dealer Loxea, which sells Toyota and other gas-powered models. BYD’s new partnership is another significant milestone as it takes on new markets.

Leading dealer Loxea announced the launch of BYD’s EVs on Wednesday at the Toyota-CFAO Mobility Kenya Limited Showroom.

BYD’s Atto 3 electric SUV stole the show. “BYD’s presence in Kenya signifies our commitment to supporting the country and green transition and modernizing the transportation landscape,” Loxea Kenya MD Jennifer Kinyoe said at the event.

Loxea, a branch of CFAO Mobility, launched BYD’s electric SUV (Atto 3), sedan (Seal), and hatch (Dolphin).

The deal makes Loxea the sole distributor of BYD electric vehicles in Kenya. BYD’s vehicles are available to lease or buy through its extensive network.

Kenya aims to reduce its carbon emissions by 32% by 2030 and is also working to lower its reliance on oil imports, making EVs an integral part of its plans.

Going global

For BYD, launching EVs in Kenya is another significant milestone as it expands into new global markets.

BYD continues launching EVs in new regions while expanding its lineup in key auto markets, such as Europe, South America, Southeast Asia, and Africa.

Although it’s best known for low-cost EVs like the Seagull, which starts at under $10,000 in China, BYD is quickly expanding with new pickup trucks, luxury models, and electric supercars hitting the market.

As it expands the brand globally, BYD’s new 7,000-car carrier is about to hit the seas. It will be the second of seven to join its fleet as China’s EV leader goes global. After a record-breaking August, BYD has now sold over 1 million EVs this year.

With new models launching and local production planned in Turkey, Brazil, Pakistan, Thailand, and Mexico, BYD expects to continue gaining global market share.

As global sales continue surging, BYD topped Honda and Nissan for the first time in Q2. With momentum building, BYD is aiming higher as it eyes Ford and others in global sales.
